I have been hosting 'pub' quizzes under the moniker of "The Big Quiz" in the Thomas Kemp pub in Kemptown since September 2017 and The Avenue Tearooms in Saltdean from June 2018. Throughout the Autumn and Winter of 2018/19 on a Wednesday evening, we also had a lovely run in the Dover Castle in Hanover.
The reason I started back in 2017 was that I had recently finished my 15-year long main job and I had a little time on my hands prior to starting up my actual main business. The Thomas Kemp has always been 'my' pub, having lived in Kemptown from moving to Brighton in 2000 until my wife and I moved in together in 2012. During the summer of 2017, I effectively badgered Sally at the TK to have a quiz and moreover to have me host it. Within a few weeks and pretty much every Tuesday bar maybe two, or three: the Big Quiz was there, each and every Tuesday Night. And it built up quite a following.
Prior to the recent Coronavirus Crisis, in fact even up to the very cusp of it reducing the UK to jelly (last TK quiz was March 10th, TA was March 12th), the quiz was fully booked, as it always is, each week with between 45 and 60 players apread across around 10 teams. And you get to know these people, some of them, such as Steve and John from "LTS" have been coming to the quiz, again - almost every week, for two and a half years! Every week with teams like "Unit 4" and "The Accidentals", the "Bookends", "Museli Mountaineers" and the "Cannonballers" in addition to many more regulars like the "K-Team", "Quizzy Rascal" and the "Mallards" the level of camaraderie and general friendliness and fun was so very often on show and as I have previously said - I class many of these people as friends.
Further out East, in a very different setting, with a very different crowd, Terry at The Avenue Tearooms (they serve booze too!) welcomed an almost identically set up Thursday night quiz for his regulars. Starting as a fortnightly affair, which turned weekly last summer due to the demand and popularity of the evening, I got to know and become again very good friends with a much smaller group of absolute legends from teams like "The Originals", the "TARDIS Boys", "Super Six", the "Skylarks", "AMAISE", the "Foxy Ladies" and the "Spoonettes". Again - all regular teams and team members coming back every, single week. That Grinch isn't me, by the way, it's Andy (Spoonettes) at The Avenue 2019 Big Christmas Quiz!
The Big Quiz Master, March 2020.
The Big Quiz is fully portable, soon-to-be LIVE with participation via Live Stream on YouTube and I am happy to deliver (and have done so in the past!) your quiz, tailor-made to your needs, in your location, or somewhere that is mutually agreeable. I'm even thinking about summertime outdoor live events!
For the time being, with general day-to-day life so much so up in the air, I am concentrating on the LIVE element of The Big Quiz, but rest assured: both the Thomas Kemp and The Avenue Big Quizzes will return weekly to a Tuesday and Thursday night as soon as is practicably and safely possible!
